How to Choose an ABA Therapy Center in California: 5 Things to Check

Updated: 54 minutes ago
Short answer: Choose an ABA center by checking five things: a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) designs and supervises your child's plan; sessions are play-based and individualized, not one-size-fits-all drills; parents are trained as part of the program; the center shows you data on progress; and you can start without a long waiting list. In California, also confirm the provider is in-network with your plan (Medi-Cal managed care or commercial) and, if relevant, vendored with your Regional Center.
1. Who designs and supervises the program?
Ask: "Will a BCBA assess my child, write the plan and supervise the therapists?" Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) deliver sessions; a BCBA should observe regularly and update goals. Ask how often the BCBA is on site and how many children each BCBA oversees.
2. Is the therapy play-based and individualized?
For children ages 2–7, learning happens through play. Ask to see a session space and ask how goals are chosen — they should come from your child's assessment and your family's priorities (communication, play, self-care, school readiness), not from a fixed curriculum.
3. Are parents part of the program?
Skills only stick when they carry over to home. A good center schedules parent training and shows you how to use the same strategies at home. See parent training and family support.
4. Will you see the data?
ABA is measured. Ask how progress is tracked and how often you will review it with the BCBA. Vague answers are a warning sign.
5. How soon can you start — and is the center in-network?
Waiting lists of 6–12 months are common in California. Ask directly. Then confirm the center is in-network with your plan: Medi-Cal managed care, commercial insurance or other plans. Superstar ABA Center has no waiting list and accepts the Medi-Cal managed care plans Molina Healthcare and Blue Shield Promise, Anthem Blue Cross and San Diego Regional Center (SDRC) funding — we verify benefits for free. Read our Medi-Cal enrollment guide if you have Medi-Cal.

FAQ
Center-based or in-home ABA — which is better? For ages 2–7, center-based programs offer peers, purpose-built play spaces and consistent staffing, which support social and school-readiness goals; in-home works for families who need therapy inside daily routines. Many families start center-based and generalize skills at home through parent training.
What credentials should the staff have? A BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) should design and supervise the program; RBTs (Registered Behavior Technicians) deliver sessions under that supervision.
How do I know if a center is a good fit for my child? Visit the space, watch how staff interact with children, and ask how goals are individualized. Trust your observation of your child's comfort there.
