Toilet Training

Potty training can feel overwhelming — but a structured, patient, data-driven approach makes it achievable. Our ABA toilet training helps children with autism ages 2–7 build independent toileting, one supported step at a time, with no shame and lots of encouragement.

How ABA helps with toilet training

We assess readiness first, break toileting into small steps, and teach with scheduled bathroom visits, gentle prompting, and positive reinforcement — while supporting sensory sensitivities and communication along the way.

Signs your child may be ready

Staying dry for longer stretches (around 30 minutes to 2 hours)
Showing interest in the bathroom or discomfort in a soiled diaper
Following simple instructions
Some way to communicate a need — words, gestures, or pictures
Able to sit briefly and help pull pants up and down
Not seeing all of these yet?
That's okay — we can help build the prerequisites first

How we teach it

Step-by-step (task analysis): walk to the bathroom, manage clothing, sit, use the toilet, wipe, flush, wash hands — each step taught and reinforced
Scheduled sits that gradually stretch out as your child succeeds
Positive reinforcement for successes and calm, matter-of-fact handling of accidents

Communication training so your child can signal or request the bathroom
Visual supports (picture schedules, timers) and gentle desensitization for fears like the flush sound

Data tracking so we spot patterns and adjust the plan

Why our center helps

Consistent daily routines, dedicated bathrooms, and trained staff give toilet training the structure it needs — then our parent training helps you carry the same plan home.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does ABA help with potty training?

By making it structured and positive — small steps, predictable routines, and encouragement instead of pressure.

How long does it take?

It varies from child to child. We set realistic expectations based on your child's readiness and track progress closely.

My child is scared of the toilet or the flush — can you help?

Yes. We introduce those parts gradually and gently.

What about accidents or regression?

Both are normal. We handle them calmly and adjust the plan as needed.
