How to Prepare Your Child for School With ABA Therapy in California

Short answer: ABA prepares a child for school by teaching the skills kindergarten actually requires — sitting in a group, following the teacher's directions, transitioning between activities, asking for help, taking turns, and managing frustration — in a setting that looks like a classroom before the real one starts. In California, a BCBA-designed school-readiness program typically runs the year before TK/kindergarten and coordinates with your district's IEP process so supports are in place on day one.

The skills a school-readiness program targets

  • Group instruction: attending to an adult who is not talking only to your child; circle time; raising a hand.

  • Transitions: ending a preferred activity, lining up, moving between centers with a visual schedule.

  • Communication: requesting help, answering simple questions, telling an adult when something is wrong.

  • Peer skills: turn-taking, sharing, parallel and cooperative play.

  • Independence: backpack and lunch routines, toileting, hand-washing, snack.

  • Tolerance: waiting, accepting "no", handling noise and new adults.

How it works at Superstar ABA Center

Our school readiness program combines 1:1 teaching with small-group instruction and group play, so skills are practiced with peers the way they will be used at school. The BCBA writes goals from an assessment, tracks data weekly, and trains parents to use the same routines at home.

Coordinating with your California school district

  1. Ask your district for an evaluation for special education services (an IEP) — in California you can request this in writing at any age from 3.

  2. Share your child's ABA progress data with the IEP team; it documents strengths and needs.

  3. Clinical ABA (through Medi-Cal or insurance) and school services (through the IEP) are separate funding streams and can run side by side — see our funding options guide.

  4. Plan a gradual transition: classroom visits, a visual story about the new school, and a shorter day at first if the school agrees.

When to start

The year before TK or kindergarten is ideal, but readiness skills can be built at any point in ages 2–7. Starting earlier gives more time to practice group routines before the stakes rise.

FAQ

Can ABA replace preschool? No — it prepares a child to succeed in preschool or kindergarten. Some children attend both; the BCBA coordinates goals.

Does the school district pay for ABA? Districts provide educational services through the IEP, which can include behavioral supports during school hours. Clinical ABA is covered by Medi-Cal and health plans. Superstar ABA Center accepts the Medi-Cal managed care plans Molina Healthcare and Blue Shield Promise, Anthem Blue Cross and San Diego Regional Center (SDRC) funding.

What if my child is not yet diagnosed? Under Medi-Cal, a physician or psychologist can recommend Behavioral Health Treatment based on medical necessity — see our Medi-Cal guide.
